Blog#2 Estella

The names of the characters in this book show their personality to the reader. For example, the name Estella shows her personality because the name Estella comes from a latin word that means star. She is described as "a girl about my (Pip's) own age. She seemed much older than I, of course, being a girl, and beautiful and self-possessed; and she was as scornful of me as if she has been one-and-twenty and a queen" (56). Dickens describes Estella as a beautiful and self-possessed girl who was a queen. This description shows that she shares many characteristics of a star because a star is also beautiful and self-possessed when it shines in the night sky. Estella shares many personality traits with her name because her name means star and she shows many traits of stars.

  1. Yes, Estella is beautiful and “self-possessed”, but there is more to her than this. Her name comes from the Latin word for star, which is also beautiful, but a star can also be inaccessible. Pip describes her as a “scornful lady neither visible nor responsive” (59). She seems somewhat cold-hearted and resists Pip’s presence in her home. I agree that Estella is like a star, but in a different way than you described in your blog post.
